Brief Introduction of Dongfeng Design Institute Co., Ltd.
Dongfeng Design Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter called “the institute”) was established in 1973. It is a Hubei-based high and new technology enterprise and presently a multi-element joint stock company with 20% of its shares held by Dongfeng Motor Corporation and 80% by its employees, and gross turnover of 2.3 billion CNY in 2010. The company has been listed among the “Top 60 Chinese Contractor and Design Firms” by Engineering News-Record (ENR) for five consecutive sessions, and ranked 32nd for engineering management and 61st for EPC contracting among China’s engineering project managers and EPC contractors 2010 jointly published by China Exploration & Design Association and China National Association of Engineering Consultants, and 76th among the national top 100 engineering explorers and designers.
The institute’s operations include engineering technical equipment, industrial investment and real estate property, with its headquarter situated in Wuhan Economic & Technology Development Zone of Hubei Province and subsidiaries (branches) in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Shiyan and Xiangyang. The company has also established overseas offices and an overseas base in Africa’s Angola. It is well prepared for offering quality produces including project program consultation, engineering exploration and design, engineering project management, EPC contracting, engineering supervision, equipment manufacturing and land and property services.
The institute owns class A engineering design qualifications for machinery, construction, EPC contracting, engineering consultation, engineering cost estimation, engineering exploration specialty, environmental pollution control specialty (wastewater) and fire protection facility special engineering design. The company was among the first design institutes accredited the GB/T9001 by CDSC certification center in 1997. It was certified by the GB/T19001-2000 idt ISO9001:2000 standard quality management system (renewed) in Apr 2002 and passed the QHSE management system certification in 2008.
The institute is qualified for some 30 specialties including geological investigation, engineering survey, mechanical processing, assembly, painting, punching, welding, thermal treatment, casting, electroplating, mechanization, tooling, physiochemical testing, measurement, industrial kilns, equipment design, logistic technology, automatic control, computer software, construction, structure, water utility, HVAC, thermal power, electric power, master plan, techno-economy, environmental protection and environment impact assessment. It is capable of 3D design for construction, painting equipment and welding jig has realized computer-based remote networking and office automation throughout the company and established a complete and timely information and service network. The company has entered into extensive cooperation with famous engineering companies outside China and continues to widen and deepen its design efforts with many of its technologies being the first application of the industry.
The company now owns 1200 employees, over 70% of which are technical professionals of different specialties. These include 22 researcher-level senior engineers, 265 senior engineers, 279 engineers and 350 certified national engineers of the engineering specialty.
The institute incorporates green design throughout the construction of automobile plants, tries all effort in both research and practice, employs every means to make breakthroughs in terms of energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies and application, having achieved encouraging results and gained successful experiences. Over the past years, with the rapid growth of China’s automobile industry, the institute has been able to complete automobile plant design and project management tasks equaling to nearly 1 million CNY of output value each year, having completed a number of key automobile engineering projects that are highly influential in China, including Guangzhou Honda, Guangzhou Toyota, Guangzhou Fiat, Beijing Automotive Holding, Ford Motor, Chang’an Automobile, Foton Motor, Hongyan Automobile, Dongfeng Yulon, China Heavy-Duty Truck, Dongfeng Honda and Peugeot Citroen.
Prompted by the market demand, the institute quickly adapts to and analyzes the market. Ever since is establishment, the company has undergone great changes in its operation model, from the initially “technical labor” providing only “engineering design” (consultation, feasibility study, technical solutions and construction drawings), the subsequent “technical management” through “engineering design + equipment contracting” to the present “engineering design + project management + equipment contracting”, demonstrating a transition from technical labor to technical management. After years of hard work and enterprising, the company has successfully transformed its engineering technical service from the initial “technique + labor” to the present “technique + management” and created a new model of profitability for the institute. On November 22nd 2010, the institute signed a “Contract of Infrastructure BT Project on the Land Used by Dongfeng Power Assembly”, which marked a further step into the “technique + management + capital” operation model and a significant step forward into the transformation to an international engineering firm.
